10. Being Self-Deprecating

When you receive a compliment, it might be tempting to downplay it with self-deprecating remarks. While this might feel humble, it can unintentionally dismiss the compliment and make the other person feel uncomfortable.

Do this instead: Simply thank the person for their kind words. A straightforward “thank you” is the best way to acknowledge a compliment without undermining it.

11. RSVPing Informally

With modern communication methods, it might seem like RSVPing formally is outdated. However, it’s still important to respond properly to invitations. Informal responses like a text or a mention in passing can be insufficient.

Do this instead: Follow the RSVP instructions provided by the host. If they ask for a response by phone, use that method. If they send a reply card, mail it back. Even for digital invites, click “Going” to ensure the host receives your confirmation clearly and promptly.
